We’re starting our educational series with one of the most recognisable offices in Freemasonry: the Master.
The Master is the presiding officer of the Lodge. Elected by the Brethren, he serves for a fixed term and is entrusted with guiding the Lodge during that time. From opening and closing meetings to ensuring our ceremonies are carried out correctly, the Master sets the tone for the Lodge’s work and wellbeing.
Often addressed as the Worshipful Master, an old term meaning “worthy of respect”, this role is about leadership through service. The Master supports education, encourages harmony, and helps ensure every member feels welcomed, valued, and engaged.
Symbolically, the Master represents wisdom and direction. This reminds us that good leadership is grounded in fairness, understanding, and example rather than authority alone.
Over the coming weeks, we will explore the other offices that help keep the Lodge running smoothly. Each role has its own history, purpose, and lessons, and together they form the strength of the Lodge.
